Taking self-portraits for your blog or Instagram is a fab way to show your face and allow your followers to get to know you better. Although it sounds easy, taking a professional self-portrait can be tricky when you're not looking through the lens focusing and composing your images on a subject. That's why we're sharing our secrets to taking the perfect self-portraits.
Set Up a Tripod
First things first, set up a tripod with your camera and begin to compose your image. This is when it comes time to think about where you will take your portrait, lighting and composition.Declutter your Background
When taking a self-portrait it's important to have a more simple background so that your camera doesn't get confused on what to focus on and so that you can be the main focus of the image.Have a Stand in Focus
If possible find something or someone that can be your "stand in" so that you can focus your image, and then stand in its place when it's time to take your portrait. I've been known to use everything from teddy bears to broomsticks.
Use a Delay Timer or Shutter Release
When it comes time to take your photo you can decide to use either a delay timer in your camera settings or hold a shutter release remote if it won't be seen in your image.
Be Authentic
Perhaps the most powerful aspect of self-portraits is being able to show your true self and be honest with not just your followers but also yourself. Use this as an opportunity to be 100% yourself and although it can be a scary thing it can be really rewarding.
