The Ultimate IGTV Guide for Instagram

Instagram is an ever-evolving platform, and it can seem rather daunting to keep up with, am I right? IGTV is Instagrams latest added feature, and I'll be the first to admit I was pretty hesitant to jump on board. In my opinion, it is the biggest change yet with the most to learn about, but given the app's history it will no doubt not only be successful, but it will be vital to your engagement.

What Is It?

Right now it may be a little unclear of what IGTV will truly develop into and what the big end goal is for Instagram, but what we do know is that it is another feature added that is trying to keep you within the app longer and away from others - such as Youtube and Vimeo.

It is a space where anyone can post content, of varying quality degrees, from rough and ready, what I affectionately call "selfie rants" (maybe save that for stories), to full production videos up to one hour long.

Honestly, the best way to get a true sense IGTV is to visit it and explore yourself, but if I had to sum it up in one sentence I would say it is this: "A video platform used to engage with followers, educate or sell products and which also allows you to see original content by those you follow or based on your interests and viral videos."

Why You Should Be Using It

Video Is The Future

It's no secret that video content is exploding and it is often said that it will be the future for all marketing. It's best to get on board and get comfortable with video now!

Longer Video Times

Longer video times means you can share more content without interruptions and is particularly useful for tutorial videos when you need the time to explain things in depth.

Reach More Followers

IGTV allows you to interact with your current followers, but also to reach more followers and engage organically. Luckily, Instagram hasn't introduced paid advertising or pesky algorithms yet, so being able to expand your reach is still fairly easy!

Easy and Mobile

The great thing about IGTV is that everything can be done from your phone so it is straight forward to use and can be done from anywhere, making you much more likely to use it.

How to Post on IGTV

There are a few ways to visit IGTV which can be done by clicking the IGTV button next to your private message icon, through the IGTV app or online at instagram.com.

1. Open the app

2. Click on your own photo icon

3. Click on the + button

4. Select your pre-recorded content

5. Add a title and description

6. Decide if you want to share a preview on your Instagram feed or Facebook (recommended)

How to Get the Most Out Of It

Have a Plan

It's important to have a plan before you hit the record button. Whether you're filming straight from your phone or uploading a video from your computer at instagram.com you need to have a clear idea of what you want to record, what you want to convey and how you will do it.

Be Useful

Everyone loves to learn and looking for free information, so one of the best ways to connect with your followers is through tutorial videos.

Be Original

As always it is best to be unique and create your own content instead of reposting others work.

Show Your True Self

It's important to show who you really are instead of feeling like you're imitating someone else or "putting on a show". People will always look for genuine people to connect with.

Link It to Other Content

Think about how you can relate your IGTV to your other content and link back to yourself to boost your overall engagement.
